روده باریک یا روده کوچک
روده باریک طولانی‌ترین قسمت دستگاه گوارش می‌باشد که ۵ یا ۶ متر طول دارد. چون قطر این روده، باریک می‌باشد و فقط ۲ تا ۴ سانتیمتر قطر دارد، به آن روده باریک یا روده کوچک گفته می‌شود (در مقایسه با روده بزرگ که قطر آن ۶ سانتیمتر می‌باشد).
اولین قسمت روده باریک که درست بعد از معده قرار دارد را اصطلاحاً دوازدهه یا دئودنوم (Duodenum) می‌نامند که کوتاهترین قسمت روده باریک می‌باشد. دو قسمت دیگر روده باریک که بعد از آن قرار دارند به ترتیب عبارت‌اند از ژوژنوم و بعد از آن ایلئوم که به روده بزرگ متصل می‌گردد.
وقتی غذا از معده وارد دوازدهه می‌شود، به علت مخلوط بودن با اسید معده، هنوز اسیدی می‌باشد. در محل دوازدهه، یک شیره گوارشی قلیایی به این غذا اضافه می‌گردد تا حالت اسیدی آن را خنثی نماید. این شیره گوارشی از پانکراس یا لوزالمعده ترشح می‌گردد و حاوی آنزیم‌هایی است که باعث ادامه هضم غذا می‌شود. صفرا نیز در همین محل به غذا اضافه می‌گردد.
در روده باریک بر اثر عمل گوارش پروتئینها به اسید آمینه‌ها، کربوهیدراتها به گلوکز و سایر قندهای ساده‌تر و چربی‌ها به اسیدهای چرب و گلیسرول تجزیه می‌گردند. سپس غذای گوارده از طریق دیواره روده باریک به جریان خون جذب می‌گردند. بر اثر انقباضات موجی شکل عضلات دیواره روده‌ها، غذا در طول روده حرکت کرده و به جلو میرود. این حرکت را اصطلاحاً پریستالسیس (peristalsis) یا حرکت کرمی می‌نامند.
دیواره روده‌ها صاف نیست بلکه دارای میلیون‌ها برجستگی انگشت مانند به نام پرز و پرز‌های میکروسکوپی به نام ریز پرزها می‌باشد. این پرزها باعث می‌شوند که سطح وسیعی در روده‌ها ایجاد شود تا جذب غذاها بهتر صورت گیرد.
